Sheikh Mohammed Urges Unity and Patriotism

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, has called on all citizens, residents, and institutions to raise the UAE flag at 11:00 a.m. on November 3, 2025.

Through his official channels, Sheikh Mohammed conveyed that UAE Flag Day is a time to renew our pledge, reaffirm our loyalty, and express love for the nation’s flag.

“We call upon everyone across the UAE to raise the flag together, as a gesture of solidarity, belonging, and devotion to our beloved homeland,” said Sheikh Mohammed.

The History of the UAE Flag

The UAE flag’s story began in 1971, just before the Union’s formation. A national newspaper launched a flag design competition that attracted over 1,000 entries.

Among them was Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, a 19-year-old Emirati. He submitted his design just three days before the deadline.

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Founding Father, chose Al Maainah’s design as the official national flag. Al Maainah came to know of his victory only when he saw his design flying at Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi.

The flag is rectangular, with its height half of its width. The red band runs vertically on the left, while green, white, and black stripes stretch horizontally to the right, each symbolising a unique national value.

The Meaning Behind the Colours of the UAE Flag

The UAE national flag consists of four colours, red, green, white, and black, representing the unity of the Arab nations.

The flag was first raised by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan on December 2, 1971, marking the formation of the Union.

Here’s what each colour represents:

  • Red: Symbolises bravery, strength, and courage, binding together all other colours in unity.
  • Green: Represents hope, growth, prosperity, and love.
  • White: Reflects peace, honesty, and purity.
  • Black: Stands for the defeat of enemies and strength of mind, not oil as often assumed.

Each colour carries deep meaning, reflecting the UAE’s resilience and vision for the future.

How to Properly Raise and Display the UAE Flag

Raising the UAE flag is more than a moment of pride; it is a powerful expression of respect for the nation and its values. As UAE Flag Day 2025 approaches, residents, schools, and organisations should follow proper flag etiquette to honour this national symbol.

Below are the official guidelines for correctly raising and displaying the UAE flag:

1. Inspect the Flag Before Raising

Always check the flag before hoisting it. Ensure it is clean, bright, and free of tears or fading. A damaged flag does not reflect the respect and pride the UAE flag deserves. Therefore, replace worn flags immediately.

2. Position the Flag Correctly

When displaying the flag vertically, keep the red band at the top, with green, white, and black colours extending downward to the right.
When displaying it horizontally, the red band should always appear on the left side of the flagpole.

This placement maintains the flag’s dignity and follows official UAE protocol.

3. Raise the Flag at the Right Time

On November 3, residents, schools, and institutions across the UAE should raise the flag exactly at 11:00 a.m. This coordinated act reflects solidarity, unity, and national pride. Moreover, it reminds everyone of the shared values that bind the nation together.

4. Handle the Flag with Respect

Treat the UAE flag with the utmost care. It must never touch the ground or water. Avoid using it as decoration on tables, seats, or other surfaces.
After use, fold it neatly and store it in a clean, dry place. By doing so, you demonstrate respect for one of the UAE’s most powerful symbols.

5. Display the Flag Proudly

Citizens and residents can display the UAE flag on homes, offices, and vehicles, especially during the National Month celebrations from Flag Day until National Day (December 2).
However, always make sure the flag looks neat, intact, and well-presented. A well-maintained flag honours the UAE’s dignity and national spirit.

Respecting the UAE Flag: A Symbol of Honour

As the country prepares to raise the flag, officials urge everyone to inspect their flags carefully. They should look clean and vibrant, without any damage or fading.
When hanging the flag vertically, the red band must remain on top, with the other three colours extending downward.

Following proper flag etiquette shows deep respect for the UAE’s heritage, unity, and cultural values. Moreover, it strengthens the sense of belonging shared by citizens and residents alike.

From Flag Day to Eid Al Etihad: The National Month of Celebration

This year, Dubai once again declared the ‘National Month’, an emirate-wide celebration that begins on Flag Day and continues until Eid Al Etihad on December 2, 2025.

During this period, streets, landmarks, and homes across the UAE come alive with the colours of the flag. Flags adorn towers, schools, and parks, creating a beautiful display of national pride and togetherness.

The initiative highlights the UAE’s values of patriotism, belonging, and unity, which remain central to its identity.

UAE Flag Day 2025 is more than the act of raising a flag; it represents shared pride, respect, and national unity. It reminds everyone of the leadership that continues to guide the nation forward.

“May the UAE flag forever fly high in glory, and may it always wave with pride and honour.”- His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
